Make sure you read the instructions carefully next time you’re about to press the button at a crosswalk. Total Crisis Panic Button was installed all over Los Angeles by Jason Eppink. That project inspired the second two, put up by Ryan Laughlin in New Haven, CT.
Total Crisis Panic Button was inspired by part of a scavenger hunt Rob Cockerham made way back in 1992.

I can actually remember the feeling of dozens of eyes watching me install at sign sign as they waited in their cars at that intersection.
I think that was the first thing I ever tried “in broad daylight”. When no one flinched, I was convinced it was the way to go.
If I did it again, I’d try “Push 45 times for faster response”.

I once read in a transit magazine that the function of those crosswalk buttons is to slightly increase the amount of time the “Walk” signal is displayed. They are an insult to pedestrians and should be soundly mocked, preferably with humorous signs.
How about:
“Push Once = On”
“Push Again = Off”
